An InCarib Interview: Fluence
Tell us about your company:
Fluence is the global leader in the delivery of innovative, cost-effective decentralized water, wastewater, and reuse solutions for businesses and communities worldwide. This includes our smart, containerized solutions for desalination and wastewater treatment, which are sustainable, energy-efficient, modular, easy to operate and fast to deploy. We are continually developing new ways to improve processes and technologies through our R&D facilities to produce the best qualities of water and wastewater effluent while reducing energy and chemical consumption and the required footprints for our customers’ facilities.
What do you think is the most important aspect that contributes to your success working in the Caribbean?
“Excellent product and after-sales service are the cornerstones of our success. What we stress to each prospective client is that any company can warranty a product, what they need to be concerned with is how the company warranties their services they are promising to provide.” Alexander Herrera, Sales Manager Caribbean & Latin America. While there are various options regarding desalination technologies, there are far fewer companies that can maintain quality customer service long after the purchase is finalized. Fluence focuses on providing effective and reliable ongoing customer support 24/7. Fluence utilizes remote monitoring to ensure support is readily available to troubleshoot problems, answer questions, perform diagnostics, and assist in solution implementation. Research and development facilities and personnel are dedicated to developing and improving their solutions to accomplish new goals that aim to further reduce product size, energy, and chemical consumption all the while continuing to produce high-quality potable water.
What is one of your biggest hurdles in securing business in the Caribbean?
“We feel that the value of the market is diminished when prospective end users are not aware of all of the options available to them, so we are consistently expressing the interest to share information with prospective clients, most of which require a bit of confidentiality. Unfortunately, very often we find it difficult to get in front of “the decision-makers,” to share our ideas and solutions once loyalty has been established with another firm.” Alexander Herrera, Sales Manager Caribbean & Latin America. The Caribbean is a very conservative market and personal relationships go a long way. This is why anyone doing business in the Caribbean should understand it is a commitment and the longer you stick around the better chance you have at securing business.

NIROBOX™ is Fluence’s state-of-the-art desalination plant housed in a 40-foot shipping container, designed to supply high-quality drinking or process water anywhere in the world, and at the lowest possible cost. NIROBOX units are modular, plug-and-play systems that can be deployed in a few months. Our seawater NIROBOX MEGA module can produce up to 1,500 m3/d (400,000 GPD) of desalinated water, all in one container. With models for seawater and brackish water desalination, the Nirobox is the most cost-effective solution when it comes to meeting drinking water or process water needs in communities and industries.
NIROBOX SW is suitable for a variety of applications, including desalination for potable or industrial water, and can meet the most stringent regulatory requirements. Offering industry-leading capacity, a single NIROBOX SW container can produce up to 1,500 m3/d (275 GPM) of permeate water, making it the most compact plant-in-a-box. NIROBOX SW offers recovery rates of up to 50%. This, along with low chemical and energy consumption, reduces overall operational costs.
NIROBOX BW is a modular, highly efficient desalination solution for brackish water. It delivers potable water, industrial process water, and high-quality water for irrigation and other applications. Designed for flexibility, NIROBOX BW treats water from a wide variety of sources, including surface water, groundwater, and well water, and can handle turbidity, salinity, and a wide range of contaminants, from 1,000 to 10,000 ppm total dissolved solids (TDS). NIROBOX BW offers recovery rates of up to 90%, while boasting low chemical and energy consumption.
Aspiral™ Smart Packaged Wastewater Solutions is a smart wastewater treatment solution that packages our innovative MABR technology in standard shipping containers. This modular solution reduces energy usage for aeration by up to 90% compared to conventional methods.
Aspiral is an ideal solution for small- to medium-sized plants serving small towns, villages, residential communities, resorts, hotels, commercial complexes, and more.
Aspiral’s efficiency makes it ideal for decentralized treatment off the grid since its low energy needs can be supplied by alternative sources. Treatment capacities range from 5 to 1,000 m3/d, depending on effluent requirements and design temperature. Several containers may be connected in parallel to handle large quantities of effluent. For operating ease, the systems can be remotely monitored and controlled. Tertiary treatment such as filtration and disinfection are compatible with the process and can be provided separately.
Share a Success Story:
Fluence was recently awarded a project to Build, Own, Operate and Transfer a 3,000 m3/day (0.79/GPD) seawater reverse osmosis plant for the Resorts World property in Bimini, Bahamas. The agreement includes equipment supply, construction supervision, operation and maintenance services for 15 years.
Fluence replaced an old seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant with the NIROBOX state of the art packaged SWRO units. The plant is fully operational, treating seawater from beach wells to provide potable water for drinking, irrigation and operations for the resort, including the newly built Hilton hotel, and the local homeowner’s association serving over 300 homes and condominiums. The new SWRO facility also serves the municipality of North Bimini.
